Upper Midwest CRAFT Field Day: Upper Midwest CRAFT Annual Picnic

The first half of the day will include tours of of the diverse livestock operations of All Grass Farms and Bob’s Fresh & Local vegetable operation. All Grass Farms, owned and operated by Cliff McConville, is a 150 acre farm on leased public land located in the northwest suburbs of Chicago just north of I-90. From 11am to noon tour the grass fed beef pasture with high-tensile fencing constructed in 2016, innovative portable broiler and layer shelters moved daily to fresh grass, chick brooder operation in hoophouse, and pasture rotations for the Guernsey dairy herd. Also tour historic dairy barn renovated with modern milk parlor and egg washing equipment, as well as on-farm retail store. The farm also includes an integrated vegetable operation serving CSA customers.

Next head over to Bob’s Fresh & Local to tour Bob Vierow’s vegetable operation from noon to 1pm. Bob uses crop rotations to control weed and pest pressures, purchases organic seed, and grows all of his produce using organic methods. Bob works with Cliff of All Grass Farms using the natural fertilizer his animals produce to rehabilitate the soil to grow fresh, local and sustainable food.

After the tours we’ll head over to the picnic shelter to grill, socialize, participate in games, and enjoy each other’s company! Please bring a dish to pass for the potluck.
